What if you could age without illness — or even feel better as you got older? What could be better than having your doctor tell you that you have the bones of a twenty-year-old or the heart health of someone half your age?
Many of us have heard and read about women who use bio-identical hormones as a way to naturally relieve menopause symptoms. But as more is known about the benefits of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), it’s clear that it is capable of going far beyond quelling hot flashes and night sweats. Thanks to emerging research, we now know that use of BHRT can prevent a host of health and aging-related problems, including osteoporosis, memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease, breast and uterine cancers, depression, strokes, and heart attacks. And, like the fountain of youth BHRT appears to keep skin looking young and wrinkle-free, too.
Oprah Winfrey admits that entering menopause left her feeling “out of kilter” as she dealt with symptoms that she suspected were hormonal. She visited an HRT Specialist and, after being told her “hormonal tank was empty”, received a prescription for bio-identical estrogen.
“After one day on bioidentical estrogen, I felt the veil lift,” Winfrey wrote in an O magazine piece that tackled the topic of hormones and women’s health. “After three days, the sky was bluer, my brain was no longer fuzzy, my memory was sharper. I was literally singing and had a skip in my step.”
So, is BHRT right for you? Curiously, as BHRT enters the mainstream health conversation, the message that many are receiving about what BHRT is — and is are not — is confusing and, sometimes, downright wrong. Bioidentical hormones are identical in molecular structure to the hormones we make in our own bodies — they respond and act just like your own hormones. They are not the same as synthetic hormones which continue to be linked to increased risk for cancer.
