Since hormones play a vital role in almost every aspect of well-being it is important to identify the symptoms of hormonal imbalance. The ways hormones affect the human body include:
- Development and growth
- Metabolizing food
- Sexual functionality
- Body temperature
- Mood and Cognition
Hormonal changes can create chaos in the human body. The following are some major symptoms that indicate a hormone imbalance:
Hair loss
In the past it was believed that the key reason behind hair loss was the lack of Testosterone. Although this may be true as one cause, now it has been discovered that the main culprit is DHT, or Dihydrotestosterone. All women have small amounts of Testosterone in their bodies, but when unchecked by female hormones (like during menopause) this causes DHT to trigger hair loss.
Weight gain
If a person is gaining weight in spite of having a normal diet, then it can be one of the symptoms of a hormone imbalance. When the production of Cortisol (stress hormone) is disrupted, it can lead to weight gain. An increased level of Cortisol stimulates the production of insulin levels into the bloodstream. This affects blood sugar levels which results in increased appetite.
Fatigue
A strong indication of hormone imbalance is waking up feeling fatigued after 8 hours of quality sleep. The feelings of fatigue are due to lower levels of Cortisol or when the levels of Thyroid Stimulating Hormones (TSH) are too high.
Excessive Sweating
Another major symptom of hormone imbalance is excessive sweating. Women often suffer hot flashes when going through Perimenopause or Menopause. These hot flashes and night sweats are due to problems with the endocrine system, which result from the under or overproduction of hormones
Depression
In cases of depression, anxiety, and irritability, the Thyroid Gland is the reason for the overproduction of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) via Hypothyroidism.
Craving for sugar
Craving for sugar can also be a symptom of hormone imbalance, which is due to a condition, called hypothyroidism (a thyroid gland disorder).
If you recognize these symptoms discuss them with your doctor. Hormone levels can be easily checked and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) can get a person back in balance.
