What is PRP Hair Restoration?

March 7, 2022 By Constance Tambakis-Odom

Metro MediSpa Platelet-rich plasma therapy for hair lossHave you been noticing more hair in your hairbrush? Hair loss affects nearly 80 million Americans. There are many reasons a person may experience hair loss, including genetics, a reaction to a medication, an autoimmune disease, or damage to the hair follicles.

It is normal to lose around 100 hair strands a day as a part of a regular hair growth cycle. Losing any more than that might be a sign to talk to a doctor. There are treatments, and one of those is platelet-rich plasma therapy for hair loss (PRP).

How Do PRP Hair Treatments Work?

PRP hair treatments are minimally invasive and work by stimulating the body’s natural hair growth process. This treatment is based on the idea that the body has many properties to heal itself if given the right environment.

During the PRP process, doctors make a serum using the patient’s blood components. Human blood contains growth factors, mesenchymal stem cells, and cytokines. Plasma, another element found in human blood, has cells that send signals to the brain to identify an area that needs healing. Doctors separate red and white blood cells and only use the healing components of the blood to make the PRP serum. PRP hair treatments work by injecting this special serum into the scalp and beginning the treatment process as early as possible, which results in hair loss reversal.

Restoring Hair Loss

Two common reasons for hair loss are that the scalp is not getting enough oxygen, or the hair strands are too weak to complete the growth cycle. When a doctor inserts the serum into the scalp, it triggers the body to send healing to the scalp.

PRP treatment facilitates the development of new blood vessels in the scalp bringing in more nutrients and oxygen. PRP therapy users have also reported seeing their hair grow thicker with better texture and color.

Research has also shown PRP therapy increases the number of follicles on the scalp, decreases the amount of hair that falls out or breaks off, and restores volume.

PRP for Hair Loss: A Natural Solution to Baldness

May 21, 2018 By Constance Tambakis-Odom

Metro MediSpa PRP for hair lossThe days when men and women would suffer from baldness either because of hormonal imbalance, genetic predisposition or hair thinning due to alopecia are coming to an end due to medical advancements. One of the latest methods of preventing or managing baldness in the cosmetic world is PRP for hair loss.

What is PRP for Hair Loss?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a natural, non-surgical procedure used to enrich one’s appearance. In the past, PRP was used by surgeons to help their clients retain the youth of the faces. In this case, PRP therapy was referred to as vampire facelifts. This procedure was popularized by celebrities such as Kim Kardashian. The PRP for hair loss procedure works in much the same way.

The first step is to retrieve blood from the patient. The blood is then separated in a centrifuge, after which the red blood cells are removed to obtain a platelet-rich fluid. Up to this point, the vampire facelift and PRP for hair loss are the same. However, whereas the facelift involves a surgeon re-injecting the plasma back into the patient’s face, Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy focuses on a different area.

How It Works

After numbing the affected part of the scalp, the surgeon utilizes a special microneedle to re-inject the platelet-rich plasma into the scalp to stimulate hair growth.

Plasma has proteins essential to hair growth. When the platelet-rich plasma is introduced to the scalp, it stimulates dormant or newly-introduced follicles, leading to hair growth and thickening.

Though it is a useful natural solution to baldness, PRP for hair loss produces its best results when combined with hair transplants. Some people enjoy the effects of PRP for hair loss after multiple procedures whereas others get thicker hair only three months after the first procedure.

Rejuvenate Hair Growth with Platelet-Rich Plasma

September 4, 2017 By Constance Tambakis-Odom

Metro MediSpa platelet-rich plasmaMen and women can suffer from hair loss due to genetic conditions or scalp infections. When this happens, they deal with the hair loss in different ways. Some of them choose to undergo hair loss treatments such as hair transplants, whereas others go for options that mask but do not deal with the hair loss such as wearing wigs and extensions. Others just chose to shave their heads bald. For those people suffering from hair loss who want a non-surgical procedure to cope with their conditions, the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment may be a good option for them.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

Blood is made up of the liquid plasma, blood cells, and platelets. Platelets are the constituents of blood usually associated with rejuvenation and healing. They make blood clot when a person is injured. The platelet-rich plasma procedure for hair loss is a process that involves using plasma that is concentrated in platelets to stimulate the development hair follicles. By promoting the stimulation of hair follicles, PRP encourages the growth of hair from those follicles. The hair growth, in turn, results in reduced hair loss.

How PRP Works

On the first visit to a hair loss specialist, a person’s blood is extracted. The doctor then separates the cells in the blood from the plasma and platelets using spinning techniques such as centrifugation. Once the physician has the platelet-rich plasma, it is injected it into the scalp of the patient within 10 minutes of being extracted.

PRP stimulates and rejuvenates hair follicles, increasing the mean hair count and thickness. It also decreases the distance between active hair follicles, resulting in a fuller head of hair.

Hair Growth and PRP

Studies show that people who have undergone PRP treatment experience hair growth typically within months of undergoing the procedure. The process is easy because using a person’s blood means that there are no problems with compatibility. PRP also lessens pain and swelling when used with other procedures such as hair transplants.
